DESCRIPTION
Come and visit the Monastery of Batalha, built by King Dom João I in 1386, in honour of Santa Maria da Vitória. This monument was built by the Portuguese monarch to thank the victory of Portugal at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385 against the powerful Spanish army.
This confrontation between David and Goliath marks the beginning of the Second Dynasty of Portugal and opens the way to the great Maritime Discoveries of the 15th and 16th Centuries.
Batalha is about 130 km from Lisbon, which enables us to discover the hidden natural beauties of this area of Central Portugal. On the way we'll visit the historic Salt Pans of Rio Maior and cross the Serra de Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park admiring the stunning views and the surrounding natural beauty.
After enjoying a typical lunch in a local restaurant on the heights of Candeeiros mountain we continue our tour to visit the Monastery of Batalha and the site where the battle of Aljubarrota took place.
The Monastery of Batalha is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and it took more than a hundred years to be built, spanning several reigns.
In 1983 the monument was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.
From Batalha we'll head to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima where you will have time to admire what's considered to be the fourth biggest catholic pilgrimage place in the world.
On the way a detour to Porto de Mós we'll allow us to get a sight of the city renaissance-style castle, an unique exemplar of this type in Portugal.
As an optional destination to Fatima we can visit the Cistercian Monastery of Alcobaça which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
