DESCRIPION

It was the fortification of the Knights Templar, seat of the Order of Christ, reputed convent and residence of nobles. The Convent of Christ in Tomar is the largest monumental complex in Portugal and one of the largest in the world. Its architecture describes the main chapters of Portuguese history from the 12th to the 19th century.

This tour to Tomar takes us through the great moments of Portuguese history, from the founding of the Kingdom, to the Discoveries, to the Golden Age of Brazil and to the 19th century liberalism. The monument was built throught out seven centuries by various sovereigns and in its construction are represented the various styles of Portuguese architecture, namely the Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, Mannerism and Baroque.

After visiting the Convent of Christ, we stop for lunch at a well-known restaurant in the city of Tomar, where we can enjoy the local cuisine.

In the afternoon, we admire other monuments, such as the large aqueduct of Pegões, the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, the Chapel of St. Lawrence and the Church of St. John the Baptist, which are of great artistic and historical interest.

We will also enjoy relaxing in its natural beauty as we walk through the gardens bordering the Nabão River, which runs through the city or while taking in the magnificent views of the region.

Optionally we can set aside time during our visit to Tomar for a visit to the Fatima Sanctuary on our return to Lisbon.
